Current Courses

Capt. CarsonUnderstanding & Interviewing Child Molesters

This is a one-day class for law enforcement, prosecutors, social service and child protection agencies that focuses on understanding the psychology of the many different types of child molester. Those involved in any aspect of investigating child sexual abuse crimes need to understand the mindset of the offender; how they think, how they select, groom and molest children, the differences between situational and preferential molesters, the differences between those offenders that use grooming & seduction as opposed to those that abduct or use force, and how these offenders distort, rationalize and justify their own actions.  A segment of this class will examine the subject of women that molest children and will introduce a new set of typologies for the female offender. Our society is beginning to recognize the fact that women are also molesting children, yet very little training is available on the female child molester. The class will conclude with information on interview themes that can be effective for each type of child molester. For more information on this class, refer to the attached brochure. - One Day Child Molester Seminar

Understanding & Interviewing Sex Offenders

This is a two-day class primarily for law enforcement, an expanded version of the above class that covers all different types of sex offender, including child molesters, rapists, exhibitionists, and voyeurs. While the majority of this class is dedicated to understanding the psychology of the various types of offender, there is a section that covers interview strategy and techniques, as well as a discussion on which interview themes fit with certain offenders. This class is based upon the premise that in order to effectively interview sex offenders, you must understand the mindset of the different types of offender. For more information on this class, refer to the attached brochure. - Two Day Sex Offender Seminar

Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse: Tips for Screening Youth Workers & Volunteers

This presentation ranges in length and is designed specifically for organizations that work with children and youth; from schools and churches to scouting and athletic associations. It is absolutely essential that organizations screen all of the employees and volunteers that will be working with children. While a requirement that applicants submit to a criminal record check is a good step, it is simply not enough to ensure the safety of children. The reality is that most child molesters have no criminal record and many of them gravitate toward positions where they are actively working with children. This presentation offers tips for screening applicants, provides a list of child molester “red flags”, which are traits and/or behaviors that could be indicative of a person having a sexual interest in children, gives some victim indicators of sexual abuse, and offers safeguards and suggestions for minimizing opportunities for sexual abuse to occur within your organization. For more information on this class, refer to the attached brochure. - Tips For Screening Youth Workers & Volunteers

Current Workshops

Women Who Molest Children: Offender Typologies

This workshop begins with findings that were learned from in-depth interviews with eighteen women who had been convicted of molesting children, but goes well beyond that to include cases from across the nation as well as data from other recently published material on this topic. Captain Carson will discuss past and current offender typologies for female child molesters, including his five distinct typologies that were first published in 2006.

Groomers and Grabbers:  Two Very Different Types of Child Molester

This workshop will compare and contrast two very different types of child molester. There are those offenders who use grooming and seduction as their primary method to molest children, and then there are child molesters that tend to use force and violence to accomplish their predatory goals. This class will explore some of the differences between these offenders and will include video clips from interviews with both types of offender.

Michael Devlin Case Study

This workshop examines the life, history and psychological motives of Michael Devlin, one of the most notorious child kidnappers of the past decade. Following his convictions, Devlin was interviewed in-depth separately by Captain Carson and two FBI profilers. The presentation includes material learned from these interviews, with audio of Devlin discussing his childhood, his sexual attraction to young boys, his abduction fantasies, and the eventual kidnappings of Shawn Hornbeck in 2002 and Ben Ownby in 2007.
